LaLiga took part in The World of Sports Betting & Protecting the Integrity of Games at the United States Capitol, a forum to analyse the world of betting on sport and how to safeguard the integrity of games in the United States. It was attended by authorities from the professional leagues, the betting industry, members of the US Congress and the media. During the forum, each of the experts in these fields jointly examined the problems posed and the opportunities afforded by the legalisation and regulation of sports betting.
Alfredo Lorenzo, the director of integrity and security, was tasked with representing LaLiga and conveying the advances achieved by the Spanish competition in terms of sports integrity. The LaLiga director took part in a panel discussion on leagues and integrity together with Mark Locke, cofounder of Genius Sports; Rick Parry, the former CEO of Liverpool and the Premier League; and Gerry Sutcliffe, the former minister for sport of the United Kingdom.
"In Spain, betting is a legal and regulated activity which can also affect the integrity of sport when used as a means for manipulating competitions, meaning that, on the one hand, it is essential to perform training and educational work with sportsmen and women, coaches, directors, and all of the other actors involved in football," explained LaLiga's director of integrity.
Alfredo Lorenzo also remarked that "it is necessary for all parties involved in sport to understand what actions are forbidden and the consequences of performing them, and on the other hand to work on monitoring the competition and betting." "Finally, if cases of suspected participation in betting and match-fixing are identified, they must be reported," he concluded.
With its participation in the forum, LaLiga continues its work in the fight against fraud in sport, for which it has become a global point of reference.
