Lopetegui played as a goalkeeper for clubs such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano before embarking on his coaching career. He started out out a former club Rayo and then moved into the Spanish national team coaching structure where he had successes with the youth categories. He moved on the FC Porto in Portugal and then returned as first team coach of Spain for two years between 2016 and 2018. His most recent post was at Real Madrid in the early part of last season.
He takes over at a Sevilla side who finished LaLiga Santander 2018/19 in sixth place which earned them a berth in the UEFA Europa League next season.
