R. Sporting are enjoying a great season that is seeing them remain in the hunt for a promotion berth to the Liga BBVA. One of the cornerstones of their campaign is their strength at their home stadium, El Molinón, where they have picked up 27 points out of a possible 36. On recent matchdays, the contribution of ‘B’ team graduate Jony has been key, with the 23-year-old proving the player to turn to in Gijón. The man from Cangas de Narcea has notched vital goals in four of the last five games that his outfit have played at home. This Sunday, it will be CD Mirandés who are tasked with curbing this scoring run.
Jony did not manage to get on the scoresheet at El Molinón until matchday 16. Until then, the winger had earned two points for Sporting with goals in the away draws against RC Recreativo and UD Las Palmas. His first strike in Gijón came versus CD Lugo. The Galicians had gone ahead courtesy of David Aganzo, but a direct free-kick from Jony brought the equaliser on 32 minutes. Pablo Pérez then went on to win it for the Asturians in the final stages.
The next home encounter came against AD Alcorcón on matchday 18, with Jony grabbing the goal that opened the scoring after 21 minutes. The sportinguista headed in a Luis Hernández throw-in delivered into the heart of the area, with the visiting defence unable to clear. Abelardo’s men ended up 2-1 winners. The side’s following assignment on home turf was against Real Betis, a game in which Jony was unable to find the net as Sporting suffered their only loss so far this season.
One matchday later, the action was at El Molinón once more. On this occasion, the opponents were CD Numancia, a team that proved its ability to make life difficult for Sporting. The guests kept los gijoneses out until the 55th minute, when it was Jony who popped up to break the deadlock. Good link-up play with Isma López allowed the Asturian to hit the opener with a finish that set the hosts on their way to a 3-0 victory.
The player’s most recent decisive display came on matchday 24. Albacete B. were the visitors at El Molinón, and took the lead. However, Carlos Castro levelled on 60 minutes before Jony snatched a late, 88th-minute winner, the winger finishing left-footed from Lora’s low, far-post cross to send the Sporting faithful wild.
In total over the last five home games, Jony has been worth seven points to Sporting by putting his team ahead with three goals and equalising with another. Added to these points are the two he handed his side with his strikes in Huelva and Gran Canaria, meaning that he has brought his club nine points thus far this term in the Liga Adelante. The next target in Jony’s sights: Mirandés.
