A high tempo game at San Mames
A derby is always a different type of game, a chance to get one over on your local rivals. Athletic Club and Real Sociedad kicked off a high-tempo, end-to-end affair in which neither side seemed able to take control.
Jonathas' wonder strike
Both teams were battling to control the game when up popped Jonathas, who picked up the ball on the edge of the area, turned and beat Gorka Iraizoz with a powerful shot that crept in under the crossbar. The Brazilian is on an impressive run of form and has notched up four goals in his last three appearances.
Inaki Williams picked up an injury
There was still time for Athletic to react, but they struggled to create any clear-cut chances. Just as Ernesto Valverde's charges were pushing hardest for a goal they lost one of their key players. Inaki Williams picked up a knock and, despite trying to run it off, was unable to continue. The midfielder limped off, disrupting the home side's game plan.
Athletic did not give up
Despite facing an uphill struggle, Athletic took the initiative after the break and carved out their best chances to level the game. However, Geronimo Rulli kept out Aduriz's efforts and Muniain failed to find a way past the visitors' Argentine keeper at key points in the game.
A fourth straight win
Athletic kept pushing for an equaliser until the final whistle, but La Real kept them at bay to seal the points and a fourth straight win that sees them climb clear of the relegation zone and into the top half of the table.
