How do things stand in LaLiga Santander?

Who was leading the way in the goalscoring charts when the action was brought to a standstill? Which teams were sitting pretty in the European spots? How were things looking down at the bottom?

MON 08.06.2020

It has now been exactly 90 days since LaLiga Santander had to be suspended in light of the coronavirus crisis. The greatest football competition on the planet is about to get back up and running with LaLiga Santander set to resume on 11 June, when Sevilla FC and Real Betis lock horns in what promises to be an enthralling contest.

It's now time to cast our minds back and ask ourselves how the land lay before the competition was brought to a halt.

CONGESTED LEAGUE STANDINGS

Even the most cursory of glances at the LaLiga Santander table reveals the highly competitive nature of the division. There really is very little separating the teams at both ends of the standings. FC Barcelona currently lie top of the pile, on 58 points, but hot on their heels are a Real Madrid side who are just two worse off than the Catalan giants.

However, the title race certainly isn't the only focal point of interest during the run-in. Indeed, the tussle for the European berths has never been so fierce. Sevilla FC are sitting in third after having enjoyed an outstanding campaign, but just one point behind the Andalusians are two sides that have proved that they're real forces to be reckoned with: Real Sociedad and Getafe CF, who are tied on 46 points. Coming in just behind the aforementioned pair are Atletico Madrid, who'll be looking to gatecrash the top spots during the course of the 11 remaining matchdays.

As for the battle to avoid the dreaded drop, RCD Mallorca, CD Leganes and RCD Espanyol are the three sides to have amassed the fewest points so far this term. However, as we all know, with over 30 points still to play for and just six separating the league's bottom side from safety, things can soon change.

Take a look at the full LaLiga Santander standings here.

MESSI LEADS GOAL & ASSIST CHARTS

A whole host of stars have caught the eye this season. La Real's Martin Odegaard has shone brightly, whilst Jesus Navas and Sergio Reguilon have lit up Sevilla's flanks and Lucas Perez has been at his prolific best for D. Alaves. However, without question, Leo Messi has, once again, been the standout performer.

The Barça attacker is streets ahead in the attacking stakes, with the Argentine ace heading up the goalscoring standings with 19 strikes to his name. As if that wasn't enough, he also tops the assist rankings, having laid on no fewer than 12 goals.

SIX-POINTERS

The most exciting stage of the season is upon as we enter the business end of the campaign. There are just 11 rounds of fixtures to go and it's all to play for. Atleti, who are always in the mix at the summit, face high-stakes showdowns against Getafe, Athletic Club, Barcelona and Real Sociedad.

Elsewhere, Espanyol will go head-to-head with relegation rivals Leganes and RC Celta.
