LaLiga has achieved a major historic milestone in the field of financial control, with the number of complaints brought by players against their clubs over non-payment reaching the zero mark. This figure dropped from 60 at the close of the 2014/15 season to zero in December 2016. This significant fall represents a historic reduction and owes to the commitment of the LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1l23 clubs to apply the financial control measures imposed by the institution.
The efforts made by the clubs to balance their accounts and the increase in revenue generated by the centralised sale of audiovisual rights have played a key role in bringing about this historic reduction. The fall in complaints also marks the attainment of one of the objectives laid down by Javier Tebas when he took over the LaLiga presidency in April 2013.
Since the 2014/15 campaign, there has been a continuous reduction in the number of complaints submitted by players against their clubs, with the total falling from 60 amounting to €7,003,019 [EE1] to just six at the close of the 2015/16 season with €493,954, and now zero in December 2016.
A priori, the objective in the application of the financial control measures is to guarantee the growth, sustainability and transparency of LaLiga clubs. These measures have also benefitted from the centralised sale of audiovisual rights and the passing of the Royal Decree-Law 5/2015 on urgent measures regarding the marketing of audiovisual rights for professional football competitions, with these two steps having contributed to seeing LaLiga retain its status as the best league on the planet.
