Day one of the 26th PAMESA LaLiga Promises National Tournament brought no fewer than 40 keenly contested matches, some spectacular goals and oodles of excitement en route to determining who would go through to the last 16, to be contested on Saturday. We round up the action.
Group A
Villarreal CF did not let the pressure of being the hosts get to them and enjoyed an impeccable first day. The Yellow Submarine booked their ticket to the knockout stage as group winners after claiming a clean sweep of victories against RC Celta, Athletic Club, R. Sporting and Real Betis. The Andalusians were runners-up, with seven points, while Celta and Sporting also advanced.
Group B
After being held by CA Osasuna in their opener, Real Madrid upped their game and won their group by defeating D. Alaves, Real Sociedad and RCD Espanyol in that order. The Catalans, who had a perfect record before falling 3-1 to Los Blancos, had to settle for second place. Osasuna and Real Sociedad also went through.
Group C
Valencia CF topped the standings thanks to wins over CD Leganes and Malaga CF and a stalemate with FC Barcelona. Los Che's only loss came to third-placed Granada CF, who finished level on points with Barça but were pipped to second spot on goal difference. The last berth in the round of 16 went to Malaga, who picked up five points courtesy of victory against Leganes and draws with Barcelona and Granada.
Group D
The group was won by RC Deportivo, who bounced back from an opening reverse at the hands of Atletico Madrid to ease past UD Las Palmas, Sevilla FC and SD Eibar. The last of those triumphs, against the Basques, was enough for Deportivo to snatch top spot from Atletico, who were second with two wins and draws apiece. Las Palmas and Sevilla came in third and fourth respectively.
