We give you some background on the home of Cadiz CF, which will be hosting LaLiga2 football again after the club gained promotion.

  • It is named after Ramon de Carranza y Fernandez de la Reguera, who served as the mayor of Cadiz from 1927 to 1931, and again in 1936.
  • It was inaugurated on 3 September 1955, with the local bishop and authorities in attendance. After an official ceremony, an athletes' parade took place, followed by a match between Cadiz and FC Barcelona, in which the Catalans ran out 4-0 winners.
  • The pitch was initially surrounded by an athletics track, but this was eventually removed among the various redevelopments of the stadium, the latest of which concluded in 2012.
  • It hosts one of the highest profile pre-season events of Spanish football, the Ramon de Carranza Trophy, which has taken place every summer since 1955. The likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan, River Plate, Barcelona and Real Madrid have featured in this fixture in its 61-edition history, although Atletico Madrid have been the most successful participants, winning the trophy 10 times.
  • The Spanish national team have played four games at the Ramon de Carranza, although it has not proven a happy hunting ground for La Roja, who have recorded a solitary win and three losses there. The first of the four was a 3-1 defeat to Denmark in 1979, while the most recent was a 1-0 reverse at the hands of Romania in 2006. Interestingly, after that result Spain embarked on an eight-year unbeaten home run, the best such streak in their history.
