Elche CF took a giant step towards safety after beating RC Deportivo 4-0 in the Martínez Valero. The home team made the most of their good start to the game and had the result wrapped up by the beginning of the second half.
The Alicante side came out the stronger in the first half and quickly established a comfortable lead through Jonathas and David Lombán. The Brazilian finished off a nice move by Damián Suárez on the right wing in the 6th minute before the centre half made it 2-0 from the penalty spot following a foul on Enzo Roco. The two early setbacks knocked the wind out of the Galicians' sails and a Deportivo comeback never seemed likely.
Elche's effectiveness in front of goal showed no signs of subsiding, with Mario Pašalić getting the third of the night by heading home the ball after Faricio saved a Jonathas effort. Despite conceding another, Depor refused to throw in the towel and came close to narrowing the gap on the scoreboard with a shot off the bar. The home fans were treated to a fourth goal near the end thanks to Garry Rodrigues and Elche ended the night with all three points.
