The weekend saw emotions run high on a dramatic final day of the Liga Adelante’s regular season. Automatic promotion, play-off places and survival were all at stake, but just one of the Spanish second tier’s highest scorers, David Rodríguez, managed to find the net.
Real Betis’ Rubén Castro finished up as the top marksman in the division. The Canary Islander hit 32 goals this term, but was unable to score on the last two matchdays. Against R. Sporting, a game the Seville club lost 0-3, Castro found chances few and far between.
Second is R. Zaragoza’s Borja Bastón, who ends the league’s regular phase with 23 goals, injury having prevented him from increasing his tally on the final two matchdays. And left just one off the Madrid-born man is Sergio Araújo. The UD Las Palmas forward was not in action on the final day and finishes on 22 goals. Now, the Argentinian is hoping to add to his figures in the play-offs.
Rodríguez was the only leading goal-getter able to mark the final matchday with a goal. The AD Alcorcón striker notched up the opener against SD Ponferradina from the penalty spot, reaching 20 for the campaign in the process. Fifth in the scorers’ table is Betis’ Jorge Molina, who ends the season with 19 goals.
