A leader. A captain. A team player. An academy graduate, his short spells at lower-league UD Vecindario are the only thing that prevent us from calling him 100% a one-club man. A fortnight ago David Garcia turned 34, and he received the perfect belated birthday present in the shape of the winning goal he scored for UD Las Palmas against Villarreal CF at El Madrigal. This was a very memorable strike indeed, as not only did it secure three vital points for his team, but it was his very first goal in the Liga BBVA.

But that is not all. This occasion was made all the more unforgettable because it saw the veteran defender break a very special record. The Maspalomas-born stalwart, who is in his 13th season in the Canary Islanders' first team, has surpassed Vinny Samways to become the club's oldest ever goalscorer in the top tier of Spanish football.

This was arguably the crowning moment in the career of the skipper, who has journeyed through the divisions with Las Palmas. Starting out in Tercera Division, the fourth tier, with the B-team, he subsequently turned out regularly for the first string in the Liga Adelante before helping the club to gain promotion to the Liga BBVA after a 13-year absence. As we can see, his goal against Villarreal is not the only reason why he features in the Las Palmas history books. Indeed, the game against Levante UD at the end of January was his 400th appearance for the club and he is on course to keep clocking up milestones.
