Matchday 29 in the Liga BBVA will be forever remembered by football fans as the day Cristiano Ronaldo scored five goals in one game.
Real Madrid’s Portuguese international is the latest player to bulge the net five times in a Liga BBVA game, joining four other top marksmen Bebeto, Alan Peternac, Fernando Morientes and Radamel Falcao.
RC Deportivo 5-0 Albacete B. (Bebeto, 1995-96)
Bebeto will always be remembered as one of the most intelligent and prolific strikers in Brazil’s recent history. Together with Romario, he formed a lethal partnership for la canarinha and brought his attacking talent to Spain when he joined RC Deportivo. He spent four years with the Galician side, winning the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de España and finishing top scorer in the Liga BBVA. However, it was not until his last season that the Brazilian left his mark on the club’s history byscoring all the goals in a 5-0 victory over Albacete B.
Alen Peternac: “My tactic was to wait and see what the goalkeeper would do”
Real Oviedo 3-8 R.Valladolid CF (Alen Peternac, 1995-96)
The effectiveness of Alen Peternac from the penalty spot became evident in the 1995-96 season when the Croatian scored five goals, all of them from 12 yards, in Valladolid’s 8-3 win over Real Oviedo. The striker revealed the strategy behind his flawless technique after the game, saying: "My tactic was to wait and see what the goalkeeper was going to do, but by the fourth penalty I wasn’t focused enough to do that, so I hit it hard and it want in. It was just my day".
Real Madrid 7-0 UD Las Palmas (Fernando Morientes, 2001-02)
Fernando Morientes is one of the great number nines to have played for Real Madrid. ‘El Moro’wore the white of Real Madrid for eight seasons, demonstrating his quality and above all his knack for finding the net. In 2001/02, one of his most prolific seasons, Morientes had an afternoon to remember after scoring five of his team’s seven goals against Las Palmas at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Morientes did it his way, scoring four of the five goals with his head, one of his assets as a player.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the sixth Real Madrid player to score five goals in one match.
Atlético Madrid 6-0 RC Deportivo (Radamel Falcao, 2012-13)
Radamel Falcao is one of the most lethal attackers in the history of Atlético Madrid, demonstrated by the 52 goals he scored in 68 games in the Liga BBVA in a red and white shirt. Colchoneros’fans fell in love with the Colombian for his goalscoring ability and his exploits on 9 December 2012 shows why. Atlético hosted Deportivo with Falcao in brutal form, looking to fire themselves to the top of the table, and the striker did not disappoint, scoring five of his team’s six goals, then the only active player in the Liga BBVA to score five in one match.
Real Madrid 9-1 Granada CF (Cristiano Ronaldo, 2014-15)
Real Madrid returned from the international break looking to put the pressure on league leaders FC Barcelona. Granada CF were Madrid’s opponents and needed points to aid their fight for the drop. However, Cristiano Ronaldo had other plans. The Portuguese striker once again left his stamp on the history records by scoring five goals in the game, becoming the sixth Real Madrid player to do so after Alday (42-43), Alsúa (46-47), Pepillo García (59-60), Ferenc Puskas (60-61) and Fernando Morientes (01-02). Los Blancos beat the Andalusians 9-1 and their star man returned to the top of the Liga BBA’s scoring charts in emphatic fashion.
As well as the last five mentioned, between the 1932-33 season, when José Iraragorri scored the first ever five-goal haul in La Liga, until the 1978-79 campaign, when Pichi Alonso repeated the feat just before Bebeto, a total of 23 players wrote their names in the record books (Zarra, Exhevarría and Campanal on more than one occasion). Who will be next to net five goals and join this distinguished list of names?
