Real Madrid and Barcelona look set to battle to the end of the season for the Liga BBVA title and a similarly enthralling race is underway to finish top scorer. Up to seven players have scored 15 or more goals this season, but it is Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, two of the best strikers in the world, who are way ahead in the race in the latest edition of a long running individual and personal duel between the two players.
The Portuguese has scored the most goals this season, with an astonishing total of 39. Although the Real Madrid striker was unable to find the net in his side's 4-2 win over RC Celta, he has scored a total of nine goals in the last six matches, a tally that keeps him at the top of the Liga BBVA's scoring charts.
Messi is his biggest rival in this race and the only player who has been able to keep the pace with the Portuguese. The Barcelona forward, who has an unquenchable thirst for goals, has scored 36 times this season, and is three behind his Madrid counterpart. The Argentinian scored in his team's 2-0 win over RCD Espanyol and has scored a goal in each of his last four league games to stay in touch with Ronaldo, and you can be sure he will not give up fighting for this prize until the end of the season.
While the fight to finish top scorer in the Liga BBVA may be a two-horse race, other players in the league have still notched more than impressive goal tallies. Antoine Griezmann is the third top scorer in the league this term, with 22 goals, which would make him the top scorer in most of the other top leagues in Europe, such as Italy, England and Germany. Neymar Júnior, on 19 goals, and Carlos Bacca, on 17, complete this formidable list of players who are certain to score more even more goals before the end of the season.
