The Liga BBVA title race is still on a knife edge with three weeks remaining, and one of the most prestigious individual prizes is also still up for grabs: the fight to finish top scorer in the league. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid’s prolific goalscorer, and Leo Messi, FC Barcelona’s talisman, are locked in a ferocious battle for the title of top scorer after a weekend in which four of the top five scorers in the league found the net.

The prolific Portuguese is still top of the goalscoring charts on 42 goals after scoring three goals on Saturday at Sevilla FC. His hat-trick was even more vital as it meant his side beat Unai Emery’s side 3-2 at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, a fortress where no-one had beaten Sevilla this season. Earlier that day, Leo Messi scored a double as Barcelona hammered Córdoba CF 8-0, taking the Argentinian to 40 goals for the season, two behind his Madrid rival.

Atlético Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann is the third top scorer in the Liga BBVA, with 22 goals, although he was unable to add to that tally on the weekend as his side drew 0-0 with Athletic Club. Behind him is Neymar, who scored from the penalty spot for Barcelona against Córdoba to move on to 21 goals for the year, just one behind the Frenchman.

Sevilla FC hitman Carlos Bacca is the other player in the top five. He also scored from the penalty spot this weekend, in the 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid, finding the net for the third time in his last three games to move on to 20 goals for the season in the Liga BBVA.
