Córdoba earn breathing space in Liga BBVA

Córdoba CF claimed a 0-1 win over Rayo Vallecano in the final encounter of matchday 18 of the Liga BBVA. The result sees Miroslav Djukic’s men pick up three crucial points, to climb out of the relegation zone and move to 15th place on 17 points.

There was little to choose between the teams during the first half at the Estadio de Vallecas. The hosts had the majority of the attacking play and looked to control possession, but could not create enough danger in and around Juan Carlos’ goal. Meanwhile, Córdoba waited for their opportunity, which arrived in the 40th minute of the encounter. The Andalusians launched a quick counter-attack and the unlucky Abdoulaye’s attempt to clear Andone’s cross saw him unable to stop his side from going 0-1 down as he diverted into his own net.

It was a heavy blow for Paco Jeméz’s charges, who could not put together the play to turn the scoreline around and showed little intensity in the second half. Even so, Quini had a great chance to beat the visitors’ goalkeeper but saw his effort hit the bar, and Córdoba were able to see out the scoreline until the final whistle, claiming three priceless points in their quest for survival.
