RC Celta’s hopes of making a first ever appearance in the Europe League final were dashed when they failed to overturn the first leg deficit in their semi-final against Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho’s side had won 1-0 in Balaidos last week and they extended their lead at Old Trafford when Marouane Fellaini headed in at the back post in the 17th minute. Celta never ceased pressing forward looking for an equaliser on the night, and they finally made the break through five minutes from time.
Facundo Roncaglia headed home from a Claudio Beauvue cross to set nerves on edge on both sides as tempers flared a minute later. Roncaglia and United defender Eric Bailly were both sent off leaving the two sides to battle out a frantic last few minutes with ten men apiece. A desperate goal-mouth scramble in the last-minute almost produced the equaliser which would have put them through on away goals, but it wasn't to be.
Manchester United will meet Ajax in the final in Stockholm on May 24.
