Sevilla downed RC Celta 1-0 in the first game of the year in Liga BBVA matchday 17. Despite the fact the visitors created a number of chances, the Andalusian side took the three points and moved up to fourth place in the table.
From the off the side from Vigo made life difficult for their hosts, and controlled possession. However a red card for Carles Planas and Nico Pareja's strike from a free-kick changed the game. Sevilla went in ahead at the break despite not playing their best.
The break helped Unai Emery's men get organised and forced Celta onto the back foot. José Antonio Reyes and Kevin Gameiro went close to doubling their side's advantage however their profligacy allows Celta to remain in the game, but they were unable to take one of their chances and Sevilla took the three points, and extend their unbeaten record at their home ground, where they have not lost since 9 February 2014.
