He played for Real Betis Balompié for four seasons and, 27 years later, he is back in Seville to help his team escape its current predicament. An excited and happy Gabriel Humberto Calderón could not help admitting that coaching Betis is "my life's dream". The Argentinian, who played for Betis between 1983 and 1987, stated that "this is where I was my happiest, thanks to Betis".
Calderón explained in a press conference that he is "convinced that we are going to turn things around", adding that he trusts the squad. "I know the players and I am very confident in them". The new coach of the team from Seville reiterated that his only goal is to keep the side up. "I trust the players and Betis, and we have to be united to achieve our goal".
His first match with the club comes against RC Celta de Vigo in the Balaídos. Calderón defined himself as a winner. "I have come here to give my all, I am not a loser" he said, adding that "I know people are worried but I am convinced that we can succeed".
