Granada CF and Atlético Madrid drew 0-0 on the final day of the Liga BBVA in a match in which chances were few and far between. The result means that Granada finish 17th with 35 points and remain in the Spanish top flight for another year, while Diego Pablo Simeone's men maintain their hold on third place with 78 points, to secure direct entry to the UEFA Champions League group stage next season.
The match got off to a tight start, in an opening period with both sides looking tactically highly solid and few opportunities. Conscious of what was at stake, neither team were in any mood to expose themselves overly in defence. The first chance fell to the men from Madrid, when a quick transition saw Koke feed Antoine Griezmann, but the Frenchman fired off target. Granada had an attempt on 34', Piti crossing for Youssef El Arabi to head just past Jan Oblak's right-hand post. There was also an opportunity for Rubén Rochina before the break, but his free-kick went over.
In the second half, the pattern of the first 45 continued. With neither outfit looking to take unnecessary risks, openings remained in scarce supply. Koke had the clearest chance on 56' with a shot from the edge of the area that was saved by Roberto Fernández. From then on, Guilherme Siqueira proved los rojiblancos' stand-out man courtesy of his efforts to join in the attack on the left flank. However, José Ramón Sandoval's team closed the spaces at the back and dealt with the crosses of Atleti’s full-backs comfortably. In the end, it was mission accomplished all round as the 0-0 final scoreline saw both clubs benefit.
