Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Villarreal CF go into the final matchday of the Liga BBVA having achieved what they set out to achieve. They both earned their passports to play in European competition several matchdays ago, but they will want to end the season fighting for fifth and sixth place.
The Real Sociedad pre-season depends on this game. Finishing in fifth or sixth will determine whether Jagoba Arrasate’s side begin European competition sooner or later. The Txuri-urdin team will therefore be hoping that they beat Villarreal and that Sevilla FC fail to win against Elche CF. The Real manager congratulated his squad on their season and asked for "a last effort to end the year as we deserve".
Villarreal are pursuing a similar objective in this final game. Marcelino García Toral said that their aim “was to qualify for Europe and we’ve done that”, but he added that "we can go a step further and put the icing on the season". The Yellows are pursuing sixth place with Jérémy Perbet, Cani, Pablo Íñiguez and Chechu Dorado.
