The European and Liga BBVA champions won the title in 2009 and 2011 and a third would make them the most successful club in the history of the tournament.

Barca defeated China’s Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 in the semi-final with a hat-trick from Uruguay’s Luis Suarez. They achieved the victory without Neymar and Lionel Messi, but the Brazilian and the Argentine have trained since then look set to make the final. "Neymar and Messi have to at 99% to be able to play," coach Luis Enrique said before the game.

The South American champions, River Plate, had a tougher semi-final then their opponents scraping a 1-0 win over Japanese champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima. They are seeking a first ever Club World Cup win. River Plate defender Leonel Vangioni said: "Only if we play the way we did in the decisive games will we be able to compete in the game. If we stay united we have a chance to win."
