Electric atmosphere
There was an electric atmosphere at the Calderon as the game started and Atletico poured forward in search of an early goal, but PSV Eindhoven stood firm. A well-worked move saw Antoine Griezmann find space in the area but Jeroen Zoet was quick off his line to deny the Frenchman. Atletico’s leading scorer was denied again before the break but the Dutch side always looked dangerous on the break.
Oblak save
In the second half, Jan Oblak got enough of a touch on to a shot from Jurgen Locadia to turn it onto the post, but Atletico slowly started turning the screws. Filipe Luis stung Zoet’s hands with a fierce shot, and Yannick Carrasco blazed the loose ball over, while every set piece seemed to bring Atletico closer to a goal with their dominance in the air.
Juanfran holds nerve
Substitute Fernando Torres had a shot saved onto the post with four minutes of normal time left as Zoet continued to stop everything thrown at him, and it stayed that way right though to the end of Extra Time.
Atletico went to penalties to reach the quarter-finals for a second year in a row, but it was a nerve-racking night for home fans as PSV proved lethal from the spot. The visitors won the toss and went first. It wasn’t until Narsingh stepped up and blasted his effort against the crossbar that Atleti had a chance, and Juanfran didn’t disappoint. After Griezmann, Gabi, Koke, Saul, Torres, Jose Gimenez and Filipe Luis had scored, the fullback buried his effort to spark delirious celebrations at the Calderon.
