Club Atlético de Madrid are still clinging on to the top of the table after beating Rayo Vallecano de Madrid 2-4 on Liga BBVA matchday 21. Although the team from Vallecas, which is still in the relegation zone, did not make things easy for the rojiblancos, the quality of Diego Simeone's strikeforce made the difference.
Atlético did not have to search long for their first goal against the side from Vallecas. David Villa, after 8 minutes and a great team move, made it clear that the team is not ready to lose ground at the top of the table. Rayo had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot but Thibaut Courtois was up to the task set by Jonathan Viera, who later made up for it by cutting the deficit after Arda Turán had made it 0-2 with a move from the training ground.
After the break, a more relaxed Atlético took their foot off the gas and waited for Rayo to make their move. The team from Vallecas then began to control the match, but Diego Costa's clinical finishing proved decisive once more as he gave Diego Simeone's men a cushion. However, the home team were not ready to give up and Joaquín Larrivey managed to pull one back. Although Rayo fought until the end to take a step towards safety, Atlético were not willing to give them breathing space, they are determined to hold on to the top of the table and are willing to do whatever it takes.
