MON 23.02.2015

Matchday 24 of the Liga BBVA is almost at an end and, just like every week, it is time for us to take a look back at the standout individual and team performances. Jaunmi, Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandžukić, Cristiano Ronaldo, Aritz Aduriz and Real Sociedad were but a few of the star performers in a championship that is more exciting than ever.

Málaga triumph in the Camp Nou for the first time in 16 years

Without a doubt one of the highlights of matchday 24 of the Liga BBVA was Málaga CF's win over FC Barcelona, which came thanks to a solitary Juanmi goal. The Spanish striker's fifth goal of the current Liga BBVA campaign held special historical significance for the Andalusian club, as they had not triumphed in the Camp Nou since the 1999/2000 season. On top of that, the away team also managed another clean sheet against Barcelona, having drawn 0-0 during the first half of the season, a feat that had not been achieved in the Liga BBVA since Getafe CF did the same during the 2008/09 campaign.

Altético's lethal attacking duo

The reigning Liga BBVA champions remain on course to retain the title they won last season. In their efforts to do so, los rojiblancos have an attacking partnership that is making waves in the Vicente Calderón and is reminiscent of some of the club's all-time great front men. Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandžukić have already hit the target on 26 occasions in the league during their first season as Atleti players, averaging more goals between them than half of the Liga BBVA sides. The Frenchman is the more prolific of the two, who, with 14 goals to his name, has earned the respect of his team-mates and opposition teams alike, while the Croatian, with 12 goals, is registering a similar tally to those of his final few seasons in the German Bundesliga.

Aduriz, San Mamés's good-luck charm

The Basque striker is, without any shadow of a doubt, Athletic's biggest threat up front. Aduriz has always provided goals for every team he has played for, but this season he has curiously found the back of the net in all of Athletic's home wins. Levante UD, Sevilla FC, RCD Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano have all suffered the wrath of the Bilbao number 20, while RC Celta managed to come away with a point despite Aduriz getting on the scoresheet. Only Barcelona have been able to beat the Lions in their home ground when Aduriz has hit the target (2-5).

Real Sociedad, unbeatable at home

One of the main attractions of the weekend was David Moyes's team. The Basques starred in a thrilling match filled with goals that finished 4-3 in their favour. Sevilla FC were left empty handed as this year Real Sociedad have proved themselves to be an extremely reliable outfit in Anoeta, especially against the top teams. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Atlético have all been beaten in the Basque city, however, Moyes was not in charge for those victories over Real Madrid and Atlético. Only Valencia CF, a candidate for one of next season's European spots, were able to come away with a point from their trip to San Sebastian.

Larrivey back to scoring ways

Joaquín Larrivey needed 112 days to find the back of the net again in the Liga BBVA. He could not have picked a better occasion to do so either: the Galician derby. The weekend's action saw the 113th edition of this historical clash, which has been played in every Spanish footballing division. Celta came out victorious this time, bringing their win total in these games to 44, compared with Deportivo's 43.
