There was a party atmosphere at Villarreal CF's first game of the LaLiga World tour in Australia. Marcelino García Toral’s side got the victory at Coopers Stadium, winning by three goals to two after making a comeback in the last few minutes against Adelaide United. Manu Trigueros, Luciano Vietto and Gerard Moreno got the goals for the side from Castellón.
It was a special game for the Adelaide football fans who filled the stands with colour and were able to see their idols up close thanks to the LFP World Challenge project. Miguel Palanca, an Adelaide player who used to play in LaLiga, also highlighted the "excitement of the players to be able to face a Spanish side".
During the half-time break, José Luis Astiazarán, LaLiga ambassador in Australia, and Greg Griffin, president of Adelaide United, exchanged commemorative plaques marking the event, showing the good health of open sports relations between Australia and Spain.
Villarreal CF's next game in the LaLiga World series will be against Brisbane Roar (3 June – 11am CEST) at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Tomorrow, the players of the Castellón side will join up with the Spanish taekwondo delegation at the Champions of Spain ceremony, closing out a successful trip in the capital of South Australia.
