Abelardo Fernández’s 2014/15 season in the Liga Adelante with R. Sporting
• The Asturian took charge of the first team in May 2014 in place of José Ramón Sandoval, and in a little over a season has achieved what has been los gijoneses’ primary objective ever since dropping back into the Liga Adelante in 2012: promotion to the Liga BBVA.
• Abelardo oversaw an outstanding season at Sporting. The coach led his team to just two defeats in the Liga Adelante throughout 2014/15, resulting in the Gijón outfit finishing up the campaign with 82 points and sitting in second place in the table.
• A former Sporting defender, he was already well versed in the philosophy and way of working of a club that saw him grow as a player. With his experience and know-how, Abelardo was able to manage his squad adeptly and meet the targets set at El Molinón. All this without making a single signing and with a commitment to a team of home-grown talent from the Sporting youth set-up.
