A showdown for the title… of kings of Madrid

They fell further off the pace in the title race with their draws last matchday and the stalemate in the reverse fixture left both sides feeling short-changed. There is a lot more riding on this encounter between Real Madrid and Atletico than just points.

- Atletico MadridTiago Mendes, Stefan Savic and Carrasco (injured).

Match Facts:

Real Madrid (3rd, 54 pts):

- Their latest slip-up, a draw against Malaga CF, left Zinedine Zidane's team with more ground to make up on FC Barcelona and further dented their title hopes. However, they are just one point behind their local rivals, so victory would enable them to leapfrog the Colchoneros in the table and retake second place.

- Real Madrid have suffered from travel sickness, but have barely faltered at Fortress Bernabeu. Los Blancos have racked up 11 wins and just a single draw and defeat apiece in front of their own fans, serving up 49 goals for the crowd to celebrate in the process. Indeed, when they get on the scoresheet at home, victory appears to be guaranteed. The solitary draw was a goalless affair against none other than Malaga, while they also failed to find the net in the loss to Barcelona. Their chances of hitting the target in the derby have been boosted by the news that Zidane will be able to call on Karim Benzema.

Atletico Madrid (2nd, 55 pts):

- This is a golden chance for Diego Simeone's charges to strengthen their grip on second place. Win at the Bernabeu and they will stretch their lead over their neighbours to four points. The Rojiblancos are well aware of the importance of the match and will be bidding to earn bragging rights for their supporters in enemy territory.

- On the back of two successive scoreless draws, against Villarreal CF domestically and PSV in the Champions League. That is how Simeone's men go into the game, in which they will be banking on Antoine Griezmann rediscovering his shooting boots. The Frenchman has gone five league appearances without a goal and would dearly love to end that drought in the derby.
