There are many reasons why the "pío-pío" onomatopoeia, that identifies the sound of a bird, has become part of UD Las Palmas’ history. The island side, which swears this season to return to the top of Liga BBVA, has many nicknames but, without doubt, the most curious takes reference from the sound of Canaries.

Its origin, aside from the obvious connection with the bird, which gives its name and meaning to the island team, comes from a quip that Fernando Bandera, lifelong fan of the club, dedicated to the fans of Tenerife during a Canary Island derby. To the chants in the Tenerife stands, El Bandera answered for all 90 minutes of the clash, with the onomatopoeic "pío-pío" which remained, forever, in the chanting of the songs of the Gran Canaria followers.
Their mascot also goes by the name of 'Pío-pío', and of course, it is a canary, which wears the yellow and blue kit and sings the songs of its team from the rooftops.
