What became of… Eugenio Bustingorri

Who was he? A left-back born in Zulueta (Navarre) who played most of his career at CA Osasuna (eleven seasons), one year at Club Atlético de Madrid and his last at CD Izarra.He played 342 league matches.

What is he remembered for?A fan-favourite for the Reds.He made his debut on the 23rd of January 1983 against Valencia CF in an Osasuna shirt, coming on for Enrique Martín after 67 minutes in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. His greatest single contribution came for the Navarrese club in the 1990/91 season when he scored the goal that took the club to the UEFA Cup in a clash with RCD Espanyol that ended 0-1.

What became of him?He hung up his boots in the 1994/95 season in Izarra de Estella and now runs a sandwich shop in Pamplona which is very popular with the local youths. It is not unusual to see Bustingorri preparing sandwiches at the establishment's bar.

Did you know…?He won the European Under-21 Championship with Spain in 1986, in a two-leg final that was decided on penalties against Italyin the Estadio Municipal José Zorrilla. In a team that included Txiki Begiristain, Eloy Olaya and Manuel Sanchís, Bustingorri he contributed two goals en route to the continental title.
