Football transcends borders and languages too. The sport is a global phenomenon and we see proof of this on a daily basis in LaLiga. The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium will exemplify the situation perfectly this Sunday: the Sevilla FC v Real Madrid game will feature 13 nationalities with players who speak a total of nine different languages.
Portuguese will be heard the most. A total of nine players have Portuguese as their native language. Four of them are from Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao for Madrid, and Daniel Carrico in the Sevilla ranks. The other five are Brazilian: Ganso and Mariano in the Andalusian camp, and Marcelo, Danilo and Casemiro for the Madrilenians.
Another language which will be well represented in the match between Sevilla and Madrid will be French. In addition to being spoken in the dugout (Zinedine Zidane), the pitch will be packed with players from France. Jorge Sampaoli's side has six Frenchmen: Benoit Tremoulinas, Adil Rami, Clement Lenglet, Wissam Ben Yedder, Samir Nasri and Steven N'Zonzi, whilst Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema represent Spain's northern neighbours for Los Blancos.
The Croatian language will have two exponents, both of them from Croatia and lining up for Real Madrid: Mateo Kovacic and Luka Modric.
There will also be speakers of German (Toni Kroos), English (Gareth Bale), Italian (Salvatore Sirigu), Danish (Michael Krohn-Delhi) and Japanese (Hiroshi Kiyotake). And lest we forget, there will be no shortage of Spanish spoken, not just by the national players, but with a variety of other accents as well: Argentinian (Sampaoli, Nicolas Pareja, Gabriel Marcado, Matias Kranevitter, Joaquin Correa, Luciano Vietto and Franco Rodriguez), Costa Rican (Keylor Navas) and Colombian (James Rodriguez).
