MIÉ 01.12.2021

From parents to children and grandparents to grandchildren, fervent allegiances to the Blancos and the Rojiblancos have been passed down from generation to generation. The Madrid derby is one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures in the LaLiga Santander calendar as fans on either side of the city divide go head-to-head. The eternal enemies do battle for the bragging rights in a historic rivalry that stretches back several decades as they face off in a showstopping contest that has been graced by some of the greatest talents in the history of the game.

On 12 December, a handful of players will have the chance and honour to experience all of the thrills and spills of the Madrid derby for the first time. Both Real Madrid and Atletico strengthened their squads in the summer with recruits who will be looking to shine in one of the biggest showdowns of the season and a pivotal clash in the battle for the LaLiga Santander crown.

Real Madrid’s new boys set for Madrid derby action

If you missed out on any of Real Madrid’s summer transfer activity, fear not, as we offer you the full lowdown on the new arrivals who could be set for their first taste of the Madrid derby as the sides prepare to lock horns for the first time this term.

●  Eduardo Camavinga:

Eduardo Camavinga is enjoying a tremendous first half of the season in this, his debut LaLiga Santander campaign. Aged just 18, the French starlet has quickly established himself as one of Real Madrid’s main men for both the present and the future. Camavinga’s immense quality and impressive physical attributes have seen him earn a place in the fans’ hearts and Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. The young midfielder announced himself in LaLiga Santander in stunning fashion on his debut as he netted just minutes after entering the fray. We now look forward to seeing whether he’s able to repeat the feat in his Madrid derby bow on 12 December.

●   David Alaba:

There are some players who boast innate leadership qualities and David Alaba is most certainly a case in point. At the age of 29, the Austrian stopper is able to call on over 10 years of experience at the very top of the world game and has wasted little time in establishing himself as a true leader in the madridista backline. From the moment he checked in at the Santiago Bernabeu, the commanding defender has made no secret of the fact that he’s intent on adding to his bulging trophy haul. A key cog in Ancelotti’s system, Alaba is very much one for the big occasion. Indeed, a few months ago he fired home a stunning goal in his first El Clasico outing and will be keen to produce a similarly impressive display in his maiden Madrid derby.

Atletico Madrid’s new boys set for Madrid derby action

Atleti brought in a couple of new faces in the summer and after having been given the inside scoop on the Madrid derby from their teammates, the following players will be itching to experience all the passion of the blockbuster bout for themselves:

Rodrigo de Paul:

Rodrigo de Paul is proving himself to be one of the best possible on-field allies that Diego Simeone could have hoped for when it comes to getting his ideas across from the touchline. The Argentine midfield general has been an ideal addition as the Colchoneros bid to defend their LaLiga Santander title. Hard graft, tireless endeavour, recoveries, technical ability and an aptitude for creating chances are just some of the hallmarks of the Argentine international’s game. The former Valencia CF man will be raring to strut his stuff in the upcoming Madrid derby.

Matheus Cunha:

Matheus Cunha secured a move to the reigning LaLiga Santander champions this summer fresh from having bagged Olympic gold with Brazil and is now bidding to hold down a place in one of the most prolific forward lines in European football. The Brazilian prodigy is slowly but surely working his way into Simeone’s thinking and has found the net twice for his new employers. The direct frontrunner looks set to be one of the most exciting attacking talents on show in the forthcoming Madrid derby.
