LALIGA and LUFPRO sign a collaboration agreement to develop the Uruguayan Professional League

The collaboration agreement seeks to create and develop the Professional Football League in Uruguay.

Nota de Prensa

WED 25.10.2023

A few weeks after the successful address by Javier Tebas in Montevideo, which brought together the country's most prominent personalities, LUFPRO - the Uruguayan Professional Football League - and LALIGA - the Spanish Professional Football League - have signed a collaboration agreement whereby the two organisations will cooperate on the development and professionalisation of football in Uruguay. The agreement aims to strengthen and enhance the relationship between the organisations through close collaboration, which will allow them to offer their members technical and institutional support to help grow and strengthen the local professional football league.

Through this agreement, both institutions will share information on issues related to the professionalisation of football, such as the commercialisation of broadcast rights, financial fair play, technology and innovation, security and integrity, as well as other topics. Additionally, a specialised legal advisory service will be provided to LUFPRO for the professionalisation of the structure and processes related to the competition. It will also assist in the implementation of measures related to the monitoring and regulation of ticketing, violence and racism in football, media rights (TV, Internet, mobile devices, etc.), match-fixing, and other issues.

This agreement marks the beginning of a broader relationship that aims to professionalise and boost the Uruguayan league's growth, and is based on the successful Spanish model of the last 10 years.

LALIGA will champion the creation of the Uruguayan Professional Football League so that it can exercise self-management powers, allowing the clubs to decide how to organise themselves, how to sell their commercial rights, and determine the nature of their relationship with the football association. This collaboration agreement will allow us to advise and assist with the professionalisation of football in Uruguay, said LALIGA President Javier Tebas.

Furthermore, LUFPRO President Fernando Marasco noted that: For LUFPRO to have the help, guidance and support of a world leader such as LALIGA, represents an extremely important milestone in this process of transition towards the effective organisation of our professional championships. This decision reinforces the direction we have chosen and is a tool for change, development and promotion of our professional football.

Through this alliance, both LALIGA - the Spanish Professional Football League - and LUFPRO will hold follow-up meetings to guarantee teamwork and the flow of information in order to ensure the development and progress of the project.

"By signing this agreement, LALIGA reaffirms its commitment to promoting the development of regional football in each of the strategic countries where it operates. The agreement joins a list of more than 25 partnerships already in place between LALIGA and other leagues, federations and local clubs around the world. This global expansion demonstrates our strong commitment to sharing knowledge, resources and experience to raise the standard of football everywhere, stated Octavi Anoro, LALIGA's International Development Director.
