The wait was over and matchday was finally upon us. After a restful morning, the LaLiga Legends set out for Tehran's Azadi Stadium, where they would roll back the clock and pit their wits against an Iranian All-Star squad. The encounter, played at Iran's national stadium, saw the hosts put up a spirited performance and go toe-to-toe with their illustrious ex-LaLiga opponents for the opening half hour.
The Iranian outfit's resistance was finally broken when Fernando Morientes squared for Luis Garcia to fire home into an empty net and put the LaLiga Legends ahead. The floodgates then opened, with quick-fire strikes from Ruben de la Red and Morientes handing the visitors a comfortable cushion. After the interval, the hosts hit a consolation through Reza Enayati, before Albert Luque struck to complete the rout.
On the touchline, there was plenty of laughter, friendly exchanges and no shortage of banter on the LaLiga Legends' bench. Morientes, who acted as a player-coach, and Luque were the two squad members who best epitomised the competitive nature that the game was played in. Throughout the match, the strong spirit within the LaLiga Legends camp was clear for all to see, as the players came together at the final whistle to toast their victory with the locals in the stands. The LaLiga veterans ran out clear winners on the pitch, whilst endearing themselves to the Iranian fans in the process in what was a double triumph for the LaLiga Legends in Tehran.
