The CD Tenerife is another of LaLiga teams that is known by a wide variety of nicknames. Some of them, such as "white-and-blues", make reference to its colours. Some others, such as "Tete" or "Fife" are nothing but just an affectionate way to name the club. Amongst all of them, "chicharreros" stands out as the most curious one.

Nowadays, the word "chicharrero" has turned into the informal demonym of Santa Cruz de Tenerife inhabitants, although it is also been used for all the inhabitants of the Island of Tenerife. According to history, it all started when the inhabitants of La Laguna started to call in this way to the inhabitants of Santa Cruz because they used to eat a small and cheap fish called "chicharro".

Over the years, when the capital of the island was moved to Santa Cruz under the reign of Fernando VII, their citizens ended up accepting this nickname with pride, using it as their demonym.
