Who was he? Ramón María Calderé (Vilarrodona, Tarragona, 1959) played for Real Valladolid CF, FC Barcelona and Real Betis Balompié, among others, although he is best known for his spell with the azulgranas in the late 80s. He played for the Spanish national side on 18 occasions.

What is he remembered for? He was a regular starter for Spain in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where he played one of the best matches of his career against Algeria in the group stage. Calderé scored two of Spain's goals in its 3-0 victory over the Algerians.

What became of him? After hanging up his boots he obtained his coaching qualification and has had a modest career at the helm of mainly Catalonian sides. Among the clubs he has managed are UE Cornellà, CF Gavà, CF Badalona, CF Reus Deportiu, AD Ceuta FC and Palencia CF.

Did you know? Calderé was part of the Spanish national side that won the Under-21 European Championship in 1986. The Catalonian was in good company in a team that included Manolo Sanchís, Quique Sánchez Flores, Rafael Martín Vázquez and Jose María Bakero.
