Who was he? Vicente José Fernández Biurrun was a goalkeeper for Real Sociedad de Fútbol, CA Osasuna, Athletic Club and RCD Espanyol, among other clubs, in the 80s and 90s. With the side from the San Mamés he played more than 150 matches and almost 300 in total in the Spanish top flight.
What is he remembered for? Biurrun was responsible for replacing Athletic legend Andoni Zubizarreta. When the now sporting director of FC Barcelona signed to the Catalonian side, Biurrun took over during a hectic run (Barça, Athletic, Osasuna and Real Sociedad) that earned him the number one shirt at the San Mamés between 1986/87 and 1989/90.
What became of him? After hanging up his boots he gained his licence to represent footballers and he has since successfully worked as a player agent. He now lives in San Sebastián.
Did you know? Biurrun is the son of Basque immigrants in Brazil. In fact, the keeper was born in São Paulo in 1959, meaning that his official nationality is Spanish-Brazilian. At five years of age he returned to Spain with his family to live in San Sebastián.
