The business end is approaching, and all the sides in Liga Adelante are fighting to the end with the aim of achieving their objectives. Direct promotion, the playoffs to get to Liga BBVA and safety are, in this order, what everyone is fighting for in a competition that stretches out at the bottom and expands at the top. After matchday 35, the most important positions in the table are starting to get names etched into them.
Real Betis seem to have an extra gear
Pepe Mel’s outfit won yet again and are the Liga Adelante leaders with 71 points after downing Alavés 2-1. The side from Sevilla, who have only lost one game with Mel at the helm, have won five on the spin, seeing them race into first place, six points ahead of second and eight above third, meaning they are close to Liga BBVA.
Betis also deserve a special mention as they managed to maintain their advantage over their nearest rivals while simultaneously securing a victory over Alberto López’s side, who had not lost at home since 3 January. That game ended 1-3 against Mirandés, and since that date the side from Vitoria had taken 19 points from a possible 21.
Betis are on top, eight points ahead of third place
The race for second
The tie between Las Palmas and Valladolid was a direct promotion battle, however the game ended in a draw and neither side could pull away from the other. They are both looking to finish second, however Girona currently sit there thanks to their 0-3 win away to Recreativo. Álex Granell’s goal was, without doubt, the goal of the weekend.
Osasuna and Barcelona B get back to winning ways
After 12 games, Osasuna managed to get three points against Albacete, ending their winless run in the process. José Manuel Mateo’s side had lost eight and drawn four in the previous 12, results that had seen them slip towards the bottom of the table. The Navarra outfit, with goals from Oier Sanjurjo and Raoul Loé, ended their bad run, and they now sit in 19th place, on the same points as Sabadell, who sit one place outside the drop zone.
Osasuna and Barcelona B won after more than 10 games without collecting the three points
Meanwhile, 11 games after their last win, the Catalan side have also won again in Liga Adelante, it was a run that saw them drop as low as bottom of the table. Four draws and six defeats was their record before downing Ponferradina 2-1. Now, with these three points, Jordi Vinyals’ side are back in the hunt for survival full of confidence, just three points from safety. Alejandro Grimaldo and Munir scored the goals for Barça B at the Miniestadi.
It’s getting tight down at the bottom
In addition to Barcelona B, two more sides at the foot of the table won. In a surprising result, Sabadell downed R. Racing Club, 3-2, a result which sees the Catalan outfit escape the drop zone after 21 matchdays. Meanwhile RC Recreativo, R. Racing Club, CD Tenerife and Albacete B. all lost their ties, meaning there are no fewer than seven sides all battling it out for safety.
