Villarreal pressure
Villarreal were keen to return to winning ways after consecutive defeats and took the game to Real Sociedad. Roberto Soldado and Cedric Bakambu both had good chances to break the deadlock in the first half. Soldado’s volley was turned away by Geronimo Rulli, while Bakambu was tackled before he could get his shot in.
Bruno hits crossbar
Home captain Bruno Soriano was pulling the strings in midfield as usual and came closest to opening the scoring. His freekick after 25 minutes curled over the wall but crashed against the crossbar.
La Real threat
Real Sociedad also came into the game off the back of consecutive defeats but had their chances. Aritz Elustondo headed wide early on and later Sergio Asenjo had to be quick off his line to deny David Zurutuza.

The Basque side had a great chance after the break when Markel Bergara intercepted a loose pass from Eric Bailly amd set Carlos Vela clear on goal. The Mexican raced into the area, but Asenjo stuck out a hand to parry his attempted lob with a great reflex save. Later on in the game Bakambu’s electric pace took him into the area, but he fired straight at Rulli.
Villarreal stay fourth, La Real safe
Villarreal continue to hold fourth place and the last Champions League qualification spot in Liga BBVA, six points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao with three games left to play. The Yellow Submarine host Liverpool in a Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday. As for Real Sociedad, they moved on to 42 points in 12th place and assured themselves of top-flight football again for next season as they moved 10 points clear of the bottom three.
