It was a weekend of decisive results in the Liga Adelante. With second place to play for, sixth place yet to be decided and the battle still raging on at the bottom of the table, goals played a key role on a matchday in which the majority of division’s top marksmen failed to get on the scoresheet.
Sergio Araujo and David Rodríguez were the only ones who managed to add to their tallies. UD Las Palmas’ Argentine striker played a central role in his side’s 2-0 victory over Real Zaragoza, a result that mathematically shored up fourth place for the Canary Islanders. Araujo got things rolling by scoring the first of the home team’s two goals against an opposing outfit with Borja Bastón, one of the Liga Adelante’s most prolific forwards, in its ranks. The Madrid native was unable to feature in this encounter due to an injury, an absence which adversely affected the Ranko Popović-managed team.
Elsewhere, neither Rubén Castro or Jorge Molina had much of an impact in front of goal in their match against CD Tenerife. Betis, the already-crowned Liga Adelante champions, took a relaxed approach to this game and were caught somewhat unawares by the intensity of their opponents, who are still in the thick of the relegation scrap. As such, the Andalusians succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, bringing an end to their ten-game unbeaten run, in a match in which their lethal strike partnership could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, David Rodríguez proved vital for his team again, scoring Alcorcón’s only goal as they drew 1-1 with CD Numancia.
With his cool finish against the Aragon outfit, Sergio Araujo added another goal to his personal tally, thereby moving one step closer to finishing the season as the Liga Adelante’s second highest goalscorer, with 23 goals to his name. Meanwhile, David Rodríguez moved on to 19 goals.
