FC Barcelona took a giant stride towards yet another place in the last 16 of the Women’s Champions League. The Liga Iberdrola side produced a convincing 4-0 away win in Norway against Avaldsnes Idrettslag in the first leg of their round of 32 tie.
A magnificent Lieke Martens strike on 19 minutes after leaving two defenders for dead set Fran Sanchez's ladies on course for victory. In the second half, the Dutch player pounced on a defensive error to win the ball back and Toni Duggan made the most of the opportunity to double their lead.
Martens was involved in another dangerous move just five minutes later. Her shot following yet more individual flair was pushed away by the Avaldsnes keeper, but Andressa Alves was waiting in the wings to get on the end of the rebound and make it 3-0 to the visitors. Shortly afterwards, Mariona Caldentey killed off the game by making it 4-0, a result which puts Barcelona on the brink of a last-16 place ahead of the second leg to be played at the Mini Estadi on 11 October.
Atletico Madrid will attempt a heroic comeback in Germany on the same day against two-time champions Wolfsburg after losing 3-0 at home. Atletico applied significant pressure to their opponents early on and Sonia Bermudez had a clear chance to open the scoring, but the opposing keeper managed to keep the ball out. Carmen Menayo also came close to making it 1-0 to the home side with a header that crept just wide.
The Liga Iberdrola team failed to make the most of their chances and ended up paying for it dearly. Immediately after the restart, Pernille Harder put Wolfsburg in the ascendancy and the visitors started to take control of proceedings and create chances. Things went from bad to worse for Las Rojiblancas when Silvia Meseguer put the ball into the back of her own net. Then, shortly before the final whistle, Ewa Pajor scored the third and final goal of the game for the Germans from a whirlwind counterattack following a goal kick.
