RCD Espanyol and Barcelona de Guayaquil will meet at the Estadio Monumental as part of the Copa EuroAmericana, a tournament that sees representatives from Europe and the Americas go head to head, with LaLiga without a doubt a star attraction. Spanish sides such as Club Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC have taken part in previous editions of the competition, and this time it’s the turn of RCD Espanyol.
Felipe Caicedo was the focus of attention at the pre-match press conference. The Ecuadorian player, who was born in Guayaquil, spoke of how special it is for him to be able to come up against the team he supports. "I followed them from the stands of the Monumental when I was young," a thrilled Caicedo said, "and I hope to enjoy this opportunity with Espanyol."
Barcelona Sporting Club vice-president Luis Noboa said: "It’s a source of pride to play against a leading team from the Spanish league." And he added that, for the hosts, "It’s one of the most competitive leagues in the world." The encounter will take place on Thursday and a full house is expected at the Monumental Banco Pichincha.
