The first leg of the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey came to an end on Thursday 8 January with two thrilling encounters. Sevilla FC won the Andalusian derby versus Granada CF 1-2, while FC Barcelona overcame Elche CF 5-0 at the Camp Nou.
The Seville club demonstrated their superiority throughout the game against an opposition who are unable to refind their form. The young Gerard Deulofeu put his side ahead in the first half following a fast counter-attack from Unai Emery’s team, making it 1-0 before half time. Kevin Gameiro extended Sevilla’s lead after the break, but forward Alhassane ‘Lass’ Bangoura, who was making his debut for Joaquín Caparrós’s team, closed the gap in injury time. The goal did not prevent the visitors from gaining the advantage for the second leg to be held at the Ramón Sanchéz-Pizjuán.
FC Barcelona, meanwhile, sealed their match in the first 45 minutes. Though they struggled to play their best football in the opening stages, the Azulgranas opened the scoring through Neymar Junior, one of the key men of the encounter. Luis Suárez and Leo Messi, from the penalty spot, added goals, making the round extremely difficult for Fran Escribá’s men before the break. In the second half Luis Enrique’s team showed their best side, with Jordi Alba and, once again, Neymar, adding the finishing touch to a game that ended with a hefty 5-0 scoreline.
