Edgar inspires Almería

UD Almería beat Getafe CF 1-0 on Liga BBVA matchday 21, a result that saw the Andalusians record their first home victory of the season and also climb out of the relegation zone.

The first half was a very even affair although neither side managed to trouble the opposition backline too much. The Madrid outfit looked the slightly more threatening of the sides and Julián Cuesta, between the sticks for the home team, managed to keep it all square by denying Álvaro Vázquez in a one-on-one situation. In the end, it was Almería who took the lead just before the half-time break, to put Quique Sánchez Flores’s men on the back foot. A great bit of build-up play between Julián, Fernando Soriano and Tomer Hemed, ended with Edgar Méndez making it 1-0.

Almería came out to defend their lead in the second half and the Canary Island striker came close to getting a second. Getafe, for their part, were unable to get into their stride and had to deal with another setback when Escudero was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card. From that point on, the Juan Ignacio Martínez-led team were on top and hung onto their slim advantage until the final whistle, even though Hemed was also sent off in the closing stages of the game.
