Ebb and flow
It was an evenly matched first half, with both sides having the upper hand at different points. UD Las Palmas dominated early on, bossing the midfield, but Betis subsequently took control for a patch. Willian Jose tested Antonio Adan from the Canary Islanders' clearest chance, while Joaquin had Las Palmas sweating, only to see the ball sail over the bar.
Aythami sent for early bath
A pivotal moment came in the 42nd minute, when the referee showed Aythami a second yellow card for pushing Ruben Castro when the striker was trying to run on to a long ball. That meant the visitors were left a man down for the remainder of the half and all of the second period.
Betis call the shots
Juan Merino's team made their numerical advantage count after the break, dictating proceedings and carving out far more opportunities. Charly Musonda, who has been inspirational at times this season, was introduced off the bench to add some extra pace and energy.
Van Wolfswinkel strikes
Despite Betis's superiority, their goal was a long time coming. It was another substitute, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who finally got the breakthrough at the Benito Villamarin. Dani Ceballos threaded a surgical pass through to the Dutch forward, who made no mistake when one-on-one with the keeper.
Three games unbeaten
The Andalusians are on a roll of sorts, having managed two wins and a draw in their last three matches, a run of results that has seen them rise to 11th in the table, at least provisionally. Spirits are high on the green-and-white side of Seville, with Betis on the cusp of mathematically guaranteeing that they will be staying up.
