Carolina Marin delivered a masterclass today at the Modern School, Barakhamba Road, in New Delhi, where the Spaniard has travelled to contest this year's Yonex Sunrise India Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the BWF circuit. This was the Olympic badminton champion's way of giving something back to the locals, who always show her so much support whenever she visits the South Asian country.
Marin passed on some of her expertise to young players from the local club and made the most of the occasion to also promote Spanish football in India, where she is a massive media icon. Afterwards, the 23-year-old gushed about what she described as a "unique opportunity" and went on to state that, "It was a true honour to get to teach badminton to people who admire us and really enjoy watching us play. I'd like to thank LaLiga for the faith they have placed in me and the chance they have given me to represent Spanish football across the globe."
Jose Antonio Cachaza, LaLiga's country manager for India, called Marin's efforts "a really big deal." "She's arguably the best-known Spanish sportsperson here, alongside Rafa Nadal, and we see it as essential to support Spanish sport and for Spanish sport to help us in turn. India is a really important market, where football is increasingly big among young people, among whom LaLiga stars are as popular as anyone from the more established sports here."
Before the masterclass, followers of LaLiga's Facebook page from all over the world were treated to a live stream of one of the Spaniard's training sessions ahead of the India Open, where the ace – currently ranked fourth in the world – will be up against the likes of home hero P. V. Sindhu. Sindhu was a silver medallist at last year's Rio Olympics, losing out to none other than Marin in the final.
