More than 12.000 fans in New Delhi and over 5,000 in Mumbai gathered to watch the world's most spectacular football match on Saturday - #ElClásico! Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have a large fan following in India, and for the first time, their fans had the chance to experience the match in a fan-park atmosphere with a football carnival focussed around the match.
The evening included giant screens, food and beverage stalls as well as a number of competitions and fan engagement activities, both at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi and the Khar Gymkhana in Mumbai. Fans got to watch the match with former LaLiga superstars, Luis Garcia (Delhi) and Frederic Kanoute (Mumbai).
Luis Garcia, who played for LaLiga sides FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere at the screening and it was wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the crowd. It was a high-intensity match and all the fans who turned out will be happy with the result at the end.”
LaLiga Ambassador and Former Sevilla FC striker Frederic Kanoute who was in Mumbai, said: “It was a wonderful experience watching the match with the fans, I am glad to see such tremendous support for Spanish football in India, it was an evenly-fought contest and was a treat for all of us present here. Screenings such as this will definitely help grow the popularity of the sport in the future.”
