The Vicente Calderon will be decked out in style today for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against FC Bayern Munich. With the final of 1974 seared into the collective Atletico Madrid memory, when Bayern stole the title from the Spanish side, the home supporters will get right behind their team as they endeavour to exact revenge and go one step closer to this year's final.
Incidentally, the two teams have not faced each other since that European Cup final 42 years ago, when a Georg Schwarzenbeck goal in the 120th minute forced a replay in which Bayern went on to thrash the Madrilenians 4-0.
The Rojiblancos head into the match in a buoyant mood after knocking out Barcelona in the quarter-finals. The Germans, meanwhile, managed to fend off SL Benfica to progress. Diego Simeone's charges will seek to make their defensive solidity count so that they can keep a clean sheet at the Vicente Calderon and achieve a victory which would bring them closer to their dream of playing in the final again.
In the team news department, Atletico will be without the injured Diego Godin and Tiago Mendes, whilst Bayern will have to make do minus the services of Arjen Robben and Holger Badstuber.
