The statistics don't lie. If anyone had any doubts, these were laid to rest on Sunday at Mestalla. Athletic Club's veteran striker Aritz Aduriz is enjoying his best-ever season as a professional footballer, at least where scoring goals is concerned.
On Sunday the marksman netted the clincher in Athletic's 3-0 win at Mestalla and, in the process, surpassed his highest goals tally for a season, which had stood at the 26 he racked up last term.
This time round, with months still to go, Aduriz is already on 27 goals, spread across several competitions: 14 in the Liga BBVA, seven in the Europa League, two in the Copa del Rey and four in the Spanish Super Cup. That said, he is still four away from equalling his personal record of 18 #LaLiga goals, recorded in 2014-15.
With Aduriz, you get the feeling that the best is always still to come. After all, the Basque bulldozer's stats have steadily improved as his career has worn on. For instance, in his first full season at Athletic, 2005-06, he scored just five times, while he reached 13 goals in his second year with RCD Mallorca and 14 with Valencia CF in 2010-11.
Like fine wine, Aduriz keeps getting better and better as the years go by.
