Girona FC's 2-0 win over Cordoba CF was worth more than three points to Pablo Machin's men. Goals from Francisco Sandaza and Portu not only clinched victory, but ensured that the club ended the first half of the season on 39 points, their best-ever return midway through a second-tier campaign.

A few months ago, the prospect of emulating the 38-point tallies recorded by January under Rubi in 2012/13 and Machin himself in 2014/15 seemed like a tall order, but the Catalans have outdone themselves again. What's more, the 39 pointsthey have racked up are enough for them to have made second place their own – Getafe CF, in third, are a full four points adrift.

Having seen their promotion dream dashed in the playoffs in 2012/13, 2014/15 and 2015/16, Girona are hungrier than ever to go the distance. They have been a model of consistency this term, recording 11 wins, six draws and just four defeats, and the resilience they have shown is a testament to their drive to make more history by finally reaching the promised land of LaLiga Santander for the first time.

Montilivi magic

Girona's home form has been one of the main factors behind their success this season. Machin's charges have collected 25 of their 39 points at fortress Montilivi, a figure second only to the 26 points that table-topping Levante UD have amassed at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia. Indeed, the Catalans remain unbeaten on their own patch, where they have registered seven victories and four draws in 11 matches.
