Aerial play pays off for Las Palmas
The Canary Islanders came flying out of the blocks, opening the scoring early on in the game against R. Sporting. Pedro Bigas got on the end of a wonderful ball into the box by Tana, directing it inside the far post with a perfect header to make it 1-0.
Sporting react
The goal energised the islanders, who are determined to secure their place in the Liga BBVA next season sooner rather than later. However, as the game progressed the Asturians started to find their feet out on the field of play. They managed to shake off their early nerves and penetrate their opponents' box with increasing regularity, forcing UD Las Palmas to temper their attacking forays before the half-time whistle.
Jony levels the scores
Sporting came out intent on getting the job done after the break, throwing men forward in search of an equaliser in the second period. Abelardo's men managed to cancel out the deficit thanks to one of their most dangerous players. Ivan Cuellar launched the ball out quickly for Jony to run onto. The winger collected the ball on the left flank and bore down on goal, going past Mauricio Lemos and beating Javi Varas with a cool finish.
Wasted opportunity
The boost given to Sporting by the goal looked to be enough for them to press on in search of victory and take a significant step towards securing survival. The winner almost came in a one-on-one with the ball at Tonny Sanabria's feet. The Paraguayan received Alen Halilovic's pass and only had Varas to beat, but he failed to keep his composure and fired his shot off target.
Javi Varas saves the day
Propelled forward by Halilovic, Sporting pushed hard right to the end in search of three crucial points in their bid to avoid the drop. The Croat had another chance to put his side in the ascendancy, but Varas got a providential hand to the ball to deny him. The keeper proved once again that he is one of Las Palmas' key players and his save secured a point for his side.
